Heiliggeist-Kirche Wittstock Wittstock/Dosse

Heiliggeist-Kirche Wittstock

The Heiliggeist-Kirche, or Church of the Holy Spirit, stands proudly in the historic town of Wittstock/Dosse, a charming gem in the Brandenburg region of Germany. This remarkable structure, with its red brick façade and towering spire, is a testament to the rich tapestry of history that has unfolded within its walls. Nestled at the intersection of Gröperstraße and Heiligegeiststraße, the church is not only a place of worship but also a beacon of the town's medieval past.

The History of Heiliggeist-Kirche

Heiliggeist-Kirche's origins date back to around 1300, when it was constructed as a hall church with two equal-height naves, serving as a place of devotion for merchants and travelers. The first mention of the church was in 1309, although the current structure is thought to have been built later in the Gothic period. A tower, added before 1400, originally featured a simple pointed helmet, which was dramatically altered over the centuries due to natural disasters and restoration efforts.

In 1704, a lightning strike set the church tower ablaze, leading to its complete destruction. A subsequent city fire in 1716 likely caused the collapse of the church's original cross vault. Between 1729 and 1731, the church was rebuilt without its vaulted ceiling, and the tower was given its present form, complete with a distinctive curved dome, lantern, and slender spire.

Architectural Marvels

The Heiliggeist-Kirche is a quintessential example of Gothic architecture adapted over the centuries. The brick hall, partially plastered, boasts a flat ceiling and a rectangular closure. Inside, the walls reveal the church's original design with four bays and two naves. The square western tower, a 15th-century addition, was restored by 1731 after enduring several fires. Its unique roof and tower top are a testament to the architectural evolution the church has undergone.

Restoration efforts in 1854, and later in 1996/97, have preserved the church's historical integrity while adapting it to modern needs. The exterior walls, adorned with segmental-arched windows and flat, diagonally placed buttresses, add to the church's Gothic charm. The eastern side features a large blind with a pointed arch in a molded stone frame, while the north side showcases a late Gothic segmental-arched portal with a high pointed arch blind.

Inside the Heiliggeist-Kirche

Stepping inside the Heiliggeist-Kirche, visitors are greeted by an interior that has undergone significant changes over the years. In 1957, Baroque elements such as the altar, side choirs, and pews were removed, reflecting a shift towards a more simplified aesthetic. Despite these changes, the church remains a focal point of the community and houses significant historical artifacts.

One of the highlights of the church's interior is the organ. The original organ, built by Friedrich Hermann Lütkemüller in 1888, was relocated to the village church in Gadow during renovations. The current organ, constructed by Hans-Joachim Schuke in 1965, features 818 pipes and continues to fill the church with its resonant sounds during services and concerts.

The Heiliggeist-Kirche is more than just a historical monument; it is the heart of the Heilig Geist community center.
