In 2005, the palace underwent significant enhancements. The flags, previously displayed on the balcony, were repositioned, with a large central Spanish flag placed behind the sculptural group, while the flags of Palencia and Castilla y León were moved to the cornice's edges. Additionally, a spectacular tricolor lighting system (blue, white, and yellow) was installed, highlighting the building's main façade and the most visible parts of the corridors and towers.
By May 2007, the second phase of the lighting project was completed, extending the illumination to all façades, creating a visual spectacle that enhances the building's architectural beauty during nighttime.
The palace also holds stories of resilience. It suffered a fire in which Gaspar Arroyo, the fire chief and son of the architect Jerónimo Arroyo, tragically lost his life on December 24, 1966. His name gained further recognition when a gas explosion occurred on May 1, 2007, on a street bearing his name, resulting in the loss of nine lives.
