The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, known locally as Kauno Dievo Kūno bažnyčia, stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of history and architecture in Kaunas, Lithuania. The journey of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament began in 1631 when royal secretary Dominykas Norkevičius invited the Dominican order to Kaunas. By 1641, the Dominicans had formally established their presence in the city. The construction of the church and monastery ensemble commenced around 1678 on what was then the outskirts of the city. The project spanned several years, with the church’s tile roof completed in 1682 and interior work continuing until 1690 under the guidance of architect P. Putinis, who also contributed to the Pažaislis Monastery.
The church was consecrated on June 30, 1700, under the name Dievo Kūno, which translates to “Body of God.” The monastery itself began construction in 1776, eventually forming a compact rectangular block by the 19th century. This unique layout, with its spacious courtyards, remains a distinctive feature in Lithuania.
The Church of the Blessed Sacrament has witnessed numerous transformations over the centuries. During the Napoleonic Wars in 1812, the church suffered significant damage, losing its furniture, organ, and parts of its wooden altars. The interior was restored by 1818, complete with a new organ and a masonry pulpit. However, in 1845, the church and monastery were closed by order of Russian Emperor Nicholas I, repurposing the monastery for teacher housing and converting the church into an Orthodox chapel for a Russian gymnasium from 1863 to 1866.
In 1919, the Dominican ensemble was returned to the Kaunas Curia. The church underwent partial reconstruction between 1920 and 1921, which included the removal of a wooden dome and the installation of altars. It was re-consecrated as the Church of the Blessed Sacrament and became a student church for Vytautas Magnus University in 1922.

Post-World War II, the monastery building served various purposes, including housing the diocesan curia and apartments. From 1965, the church was adapted into a cinema called “Santaka,” which operated until 1990. Following Lithuania’s restoration of independence, the church returned to the archdiocese and served as temporary storage for Caritas before being transformed into a chapel for academic youth by the Jesuits.
Since 2005, the chapel has hosted perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. In 2016, Archbishop Lionginas Virbalas initiated restoration projects, and a newly established perpetual adoration chapel was consecrated within the church. By 2019, the former cinema space on the second floor was reimagined as a venue for cultural events, featuring contemporary art exhibitions and light installations.
The Church of the Blessed Sacrament's façade is adorned with a circular mosaic of Jesus, crafted by artists Juozas Mikėnas and Boleslovas Adomas Motuza Matuzevičius in 1933. Originally designed as a three-nave, cross-shaped structure, the church once boasted three towers, which were removed during the Soviet era. The church and monastery are surrounded by a 2.5-meter-high wall, and in 1996, the ensemble was registered as a cultural heritage site.
