The History of the Roter Turm

Interestingly, the name Roter Turm emerged in the 17th century, possibly due to the once-red hue of its copper roof or the blood court held at its base, symbolized by the Roland statue that once stood nearby.

Originally made of wood, it was relocated several times due to urban development and was eventually replaced by a stone version in 1719. The Roter Turm's late Gothic style is characterized by its rectangular base, measuring approximately 10 by 15 meters, and its impressive height of 80.7 meters, making it the tallest medieval structure in Halle. Throughout its history, the Roter Turm has undergone several reconstructions, particularly after suffering extensive damage during World War II. A significant artillery strike in April 1945 led to the loss of its original spire.
