The Historical Tapestry of Leonhardskirche

The origins of Leonhardskirche date back to 1188, marking its presence in historical records. By 1232, it was recognized as a church within the vicariate of Riegersburg, and in 1387, it was elevated to the status of a parish church. The church we see today was constructed between 1898 and 1900, designed by architect Hans Pascher. It beautifully incorporates elements from its 14th-century predecessor, which now serves as a war memorial.

Originally, the site was home to a Gothic structure, remnants of which still whisper tales of the past. The older church's nave has been preserved, offering a glimpse into the architectural transitions that have shaped this sacred space over the centuries.

Architectural Marvels

The church's main building is a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. Its expansive six-bay nave is flanked by side chapels, leading to a square, recessed chancel. This design replaced the southern late Gothic chapel and eastern Gothic chancel, integrating the older Gothic nave as an annex.

Outside, you’ll find well-preserved stone epitaphs, including those dedicated to W. Zwickhl (1582) and M. Steinhaisl (1581), adding layers of history to the church’s exterior.

The Gothic Nave: A Memorial to the Past

To the north, the three-bay Gothic nave, with its ribbed vaults supported by wall pillars, stands as a poignant war memorial. This part of the church, dating back to the 14th century, was transformed following significant war damage in 1945. The ground floor of the former church tower, bearing the date 1688, remains intact, though the upper portion was destroyed during the war.

Inside, the altar area is graced by a Crucifixion group crafted by the South Tyrolean sculptor Veit Königer in the 18th century, a masterpiece that adds to the church’s artistic heritage.

The Vibrant Bell Tower

Between 1961 and 1964, a freestanding bell tower was constructed, reaching a height of 72 meters. Designed by architect Eberhard Jäger, this concrete structure is adorned with over 2,000 colorful panels, painted in 1987 under the theme Many Colors, One Tower – Many People, One Parish! This vibrant artwork was guided by the Graz painter Gustav Troger, symbolizing unity and diversity.

The bells were renewed on May 8, 2015, and now include a Peace Bell, adding a harmonious auditory element to the town's landscape.

The Historic Tabor

Surrounding the church’s chancel are remnants of Feldbach's old tabor, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Originally, this fortified area enclosed the church with a moat and high walls featuring gunports, along with multi-story storage buildings and defensive walkways. Although partially demolished in 1878, the remaining structures now serve as a local history and fishing museum, preserving the town’s defensive past.

The Magnificent Organ

The church’s organ, built in 2012 by the Swiss organ builder Mathis, is a modern marvel housed in an impressive case measuring approximately 11 meters wide, 10 meters high, and up to 3 meters deep. With 46 registers and 3,597 pipes, it offers a rich auditory experience. The organ includes a unique wind chime named after the town’s parish priest, Friedrich Weingartmann, adding a personal touch to its musical repertoire.
