The church was once celebrated as the most distinguished in the Duchy of Westphalia.

Throughout its history, the church has withstood numerous trials, including destructive fires during the Thirty Years' War, the Soest Feud, and major conflagrations in 1710 and 1971. Each time, it rose from the ashes, preserving its place in the heart of Erwitte's community. A significant renovation between 2005 and 2006 restored much of its original grandeur.

Architectural Marvels

The exterior of St. Laurentius is characterized by its simple quarry stone walls, with the transept and nave forming the core of the structure. The choir apse is adorned with a round arch frieze, while the central nave is almost square, leading to a semicircular apse. The side aisles, renewed in the 19th century, add to the church's architectural charm.

The imposing tower, constructed around the mid-13th century, stands approximately 80 meters tall, serving as both a spiritual beacon and a historical landmark. Originally part of the town's fortifications, the tower features a Romanesque tower hood added after the 1971 fire. The tympanum above the south portal depicts Archangel Michael battling the dragon alongside St. Lawrence. The Romanesque cross, dating to around 1200 and known as the grace cross, is the most precious piece of its furnishings. Among the church's artistic gems is the Pietà by Heinrich Gröninger, a masterpiece from the early 17th century. Originally used as an altarpiece, it now resides at the south wall of the tower bay. The double Madonna, suspended from the nave's vault, is a splendid example of late 17th-century baroque artistry. Draped in a blue undergarment and a gilded overgarment, Maria holds a golden scepter, her head crowned and surrounded by a halo of twelve stars, symbolizing her celestial guardianship.

The Musical and Bell Traditions
