The origins of San Benedetto date back to the Aragonese period, with the establishment of a female Benedictine monastery outside the city walls in 1334. Founded by Rugieri la Matina and Alemanna Lumello, the monastery grew in prominence with the support of Bishop Simone del Pozzo. By the 15th century, the nuns relocated to the current site, a location once occupied by the Temple of Aesculapius.
Following the devastating earthquake of Val di Noto in 1693, the church and its adjoining monastery were reconstructed between 1704 and 1713. This reconstruction marked the beginning of a new era for San Benedetto, with its striking facade designed by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini and its exquisite interior frescoes crafted by Giovanni Tuccari. The church was partially completed in 1747, with final touches added in 1763, making it a masterpiece of baroque architecture.
Visitors to San Benedetto are greeted by the stunning Scalinata dell'Angelo, an opulent marble staircase adorned with statues of angels. The right nave of San Benedetto features a series of captivating artworks. The first archway houses a painting of the Immaculate Conception by Sebastiano Lo Monaco. Further along, remnants of an ancient fresco depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Placidus can be seen in the second archway. The third archway showcases Michele Rapisardi’s painting of King Totila prostrating before Saint Benedict, alongside an 18th-century oil painting by Guglielmo Borremans.
On the left side, visitors will find Matteo Desiderato's 1780 painting of Tobias and the Angel in the first archway. The second archway contains a depiction of the Martyrdom of Saint Agatha, dating back to 1726. The third archway is home to the Altar of the Holy Crucifix, featuring a crucifix attributed to Giulio Gallo from 1685, surrounded by 18th-century depictions of Calvary.
The high altar of San Benedetto is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, constructed from polychrome marble with inlays of hard stones and Sicilian jasper. It is adorned with bronze panels, silver laminates, and gold-patinated inserts. At its center, the altar proudly displays the Agnus Dei, symbolizing the Lamb of God, on a sacred book sealed with seven seals. The silver panels, attributed to Giovanni Petrosino in 1789, depict the Last Supper and are flanked by medallions, with a central tabernacle door featuring King David playing the lyre.
San Benedetto is part of a larger monastic complex that includes the greater and lesser abbeys, connected by a covered bridge spanning Via dei Crociferi. This architectural feature, constructed in 1704, has become a symbol of Catania, representing the city's rich cultural heritage.
