Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard

Immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the Krimpenerwaard region at the Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard in Capelle aan den IJssel, Netherlands. This charming museum is a treasure trove of local heritage, offering a vivid glimpse into the lives and traditions of the early 20th century. Nestled in a picturesque setting, the museum boasts a delightful collection housed in an authentic farmhouse and its adjoining stables, promising an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

The Origins of the Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard

The story of the Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard begins in 1953 with the establishment of the Oudheidkamer Krimpen aan den IJssel by Marinus Littel, Johannes Alettinus van Leeuwen, and Pieter Jan van der Giessen. Starting with a modest budget of just 25 guilders, the Oudheidkamer aimed to preserve and showcase the unique cultural heritage of the region. The first exhibition, held in 1955, marked the 100th anniversary of the administrative union between Krimpen aan den IJssel and the island of Stormpolder, sparking interest and donations from the local community.

As the collection grew, the need for a larger space became evident. In 1962, the museum found its new home in a historic farmhouse on the IJsseldijk, generously provided by the De Jong family. Officially opened in 1968 after extensive renovations, the museum continued to expand its collection and facilities, eventually becoming the Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard in 1971.

Exploring the Museum Farmhouse

The museum farmhouse is a beautifully preserved example of traditional Dutch architecture, with its thatched roof and charming facade. Visitors enter through the stable, where a fascinating array of agricultural tools and equipment is on display. From butter churns and cheese presses to weigh scales and sleds, these artifacts offer a glimpse into the daily life of the region's farmers.

Adjacent to the stable, the kitchen is a treasure trove of household items, including cooking utensils, clothing presses, and a richly decorated dining area. The cellar, once used for cheese-making, now houses an exhibition dedicated to this important local craft.

The farmhouse's pronkkamer or parlor showcases an impressive collection of decorative arts, including silverware from Schoonhoven, paintings, and textiles. This room, once divided into smaller spaces, now serves as a single exhibition area, highlighting the region's artistic heritage. The adjoining opkamer features a historical bedroom setup with a traditional box bed and a writing desk, adding to the authentic atmosphere.

Upstairs, the attic is divided into sections for temporary exhibitions and a permanent display on the history of the Krimpenerwaard. Here, visitors can explore detailed models, a historical classroom setup, and various artifacts that tell the story of the region's past.
