NEMO Science Center Amsterdam

NEMO Science Center

Amsterdam, a city renowned for its canals, bicycles, and artistic heritage, is also home to one of the most captivating science museums in the world: the NEMO Science Center. This iconic institution, known locally simply as NEMO, is a place where science and technology come to life through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, making it a must-visit for families, curious minds, and science enthusiasts alike.

A Journey Through Science and Technology

The NEMO Science Center is not just a museum; it's an immersive experience that invites visitors to explore the wonders of science through play and experimentation. The center's motto, Hands On!, is evident in every corner of the museum, where visitors are encouraged to touch, manipulate, and engage with the exhibits. The museum's goal is to inspire young people to develop an interest in science and technology, and it certainly achieves this with its dynamic and educational displays.

Exhibitions That Ignite Curiosity

The museum's permanent exhibition is divided into several themed areas, each focusing on different aspects of science and technology. In Fenomena, visitors can investigate various natural phenomena, exploring the principles of physics and the wonders of the natural world. Technium delves into the realm of engineering and technology, showcasing the marvels of human innovation and the impact of technology on our daily lives.

Elementa is a fascinating area dedicated to astronomy and chemistry, where visitors can learn about the mysteries of the universe and the elements that make up our world. Within Elementa, the Lab offers a unique opportunity for visitors to conduct real laboratory experiments, providing a hands-on introduction to scientific research. Humania explores the human body and mind, covering topics from biology and health to psychology and behavior.

On the rooftop terrace, the Energetica exhibition focuses on sustainable energy sources. Here, visitors can learn about renewable energy and the importance of sustainability through interactive displays and demonstrations. The rooftop also offers stunning views of Amsterdam, making it a perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day's discoveries.

An Architectural Marvel

The NEMO Science Center is as much an architectural landmark as it is a museum. Designed by the renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, the building is constructed on the foundations of the IJ Tunnel and is located at the Oosterdok, close to Amsterdam Central Station. The distinctive shape of the building, which resembles a ship emerging from the water, is a nod to Amsterdam's maritime heritage and the entrance to the IJ Tunnel, mirrored against the ground.

The building's striking green copper facade and its unique design have made it an iconic part of Amsterdam's skyline. Inside, the museum's layout is designed to facilitate exploration and discovery, with each floor offering new and exciting experiences for visitors of all ages.

A Rich History of Science Communication

NEMO's origins date back to 1923 when it was founded as the Museum van den Arbeid by painter Herman Heijenbrock. Over the years, the museum evolved, becoming the Nederlands Instituut voor Nijverheid en Techniek (NINT) in 1954. In 1997, the current building was opened under the name NewMetropolis, and after overcoming financial difficulties in 2000, the institution was rebranded as the Science Center NEMO, and later as the NEMO Science Museum.

In 2019, NEMO, in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum Boerhaave and the Teylers Museum, established the Irispenning, an award for excellence in science communication. This initiative reflects NEMO's ongoing commitment to promoting scientific knowledge and engaging the public in meaningful ways.

A Hub for Science and Technology

The NEMO Science Center is part of the Stichting Nationaal Centrum voor Wetenschap en Technologie (National Center for Science and Technology Foundation), which also organizes events like the Weekend of Science and operates the digital platform Kennislink. Recognized as a registered museum since 2011, NEMO continues to be a leading institution in science communication and education.

In addition to its interactive exhibits, NEMO manages a collection of 20,000 objects, many of which come from the former public center Energetica. This collection includes items related to lighting, installation technology, energy generation and storage, and household electrical appliances, housed in a depot in Amsterdam-Noord.

Plan Your Visit

The NEMO Science Center is open to visitors year-round, offering a wide range of activities and exhibits that cater to all ages. Whether you're a local resident or a tourist exploring Amsterdam, a visit to NEMO promises a day of fun, learning, and inspiration. With its engaging displays, stunning architecture, and commitment to science education, the NEMO Science Center is truly a gem in the heart of Amsterdam, waiting to be discovered.
